The Golden Strip's largest annual event highlights Memorial Day weekend in a high-flying kickoff to summer.

Fifth District rep will be a formidable foe.
On a computer somewhere in the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) offices in Washington, DC there is a list of Republican House members. The members are ranked in order of vulnerability to defeat by a Democrat in 2014. At present, the GOP controls the House by more than 30 seats. It’s highly unlikely that Democrats can win back control of the House in 2014, especially in mid-term election, where tradition says that the party not occupying the White House will do well. Nevertheless, the list exists and reasonably high on it is Mick Mulvaney, who represents South Carolina’s 5th District, which covers the portion of the state that is a suburb of Charlotte, notably Rock Hill and Fort Mill. Mulvaney was elected in 2010, along …

Nationwide, gas prices were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the last three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said. "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011. In past years, prices have declined heading into early summer as oil refineries produced more gasoline to meet expected summer driving demand. This year, though, Midwest refineries haven't …
Meantime, USC also is ranked 5th by Athlon Sports, just ahead of Clemson, as SC college football rolls into a potentially monstrous 2013 season.
The USC Gamecocks, coming off back-to-back 11-2 seasons and boasting arguably the nation's best football player in defensive end and physical freakshow Jadeveon Clowney, are getting some major preseason love by pigskin prognosticators. Just one day after their archrival Clemson Tigers made a splash by being ranked sixth in a preseason poll by Athlon Sports, the Gamecocks on Thursday bested the Tigers — times two. Athlon on Thursday picked the Gamecocks fifth in its preseason poll, just a notch ahead of the Tigers, who are expecting at least an ACC championship year on the arm of star QB Tajh Boyd. But not to be outdone, The Sporting News ranked the Gamecocks third in its preseason poll, behind only Alabama and Stanford, giving the …

The work needs to be done, but some people fire up their machines while others are still trying to sleep.
In the movie LA Story, Victoria Tennant's character, newly arrived from England to Los Angeles, asks Steve Martin's character when the right time for low, sustained booming noises is in LA. His reply? “Low, sustained booming noises? 9:00am, 9:15am?” He later discovers that she plays the tuba. Now that spring has arrived, many people will be working on their yards and gardens on the weekends. But for many others, especially those who work late hours, weekends are a chance to catch up on sleep. I don't mind neighbors firing up their lawn mowers, weed whackers or leaf blowers...but I do mind when they do it at 7:30 in the morning. I understand wanting to avoid doing the work in the heat of the day, but some people jump the gun. Speak Out: …
