Simpsonville's Younginer Gives Stellar Outing for Greenville Drive

Madison Younginer, a former Mauldin hurler, is in a relief role this season for the minor league team.

Simpsonville native and former Mauldin High School standout pitcher Madsion Younginer had a stellar outing in his season debut Saturday in a relief role for the Greenville Drive.

Younginer, a former seventh-round pick by the Boston Red Sox, tossed four scoreless innings and struck out seven and allowing only three hits against the Charleston RiverDogs, who rallied with four runs in the ninth against another pitcher to win, 6-2.

The 22-year-old missed most of last summer after he was sidelined June 3 with a shoulder injury, stuck with a 1-8 record with a 7.29 ERA for Greenville.

He rehabbed in Florida and returned to pitch in the Dominican Republic during the fall.

Younginer was the South Carolina Player of the Year in 2009 and passed up an offer from Clemson to turn professional. He had made only one previous relief appearance in 45 career games in the minor leagues but at least for now will pitch out of the bullpen.
