First Major League Start for Upstate's Roth Ends Badly

In his first Major League start, the Upstate's Michael Roth was off to a great start.

Roth, pitching for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, held the Texas Rangers scoreless for the first three innings.

In the fourth inning, the former USC star and Riverside High product's game fell apart. Roth left the game that inning with one out, bases loaded and the Angels trailing by two.

The Angels would give up nine runs that inning and change pitchers three times.

The Rangers would take the win, 11-3.

was called up two weeks ago by the Angels — making him the first minor leaguer of the season to be called up to the Majors.

Roth, 23, was the 2006 South Carolina player of the year as a sophomore at Riverside. He was named to the 3A all-state team in 2006 and 2008. The left-hander was also a member of the 2008 Big League World Series champions from Taylors. Roth was the starting ace for USC, which included back-to-back national championships.
