Clemson Rises to 21st Among Top Public Universities

It is the university's highest rank and the sixth consecutive year the school has been in the top 25

Clemson University ranks 21st among national public universities, according to U.S.News & World Report’s annual guide to “America’s Best Colleges” for 2014.

It is the university’s highest rank and the sixth consecutive year the school has been in the top 25.

Additionally, Clemson ranks eighth among “up-and-coming schools” that have made “the most promising and innovative changes in academics, faculty, students, campus or facilities.” The university also is recognized for writing in the disciplines and senior capstone.

"I am very pleased that Clemson's momentum to the top 20 continues, but it is important to remember why we set such an ambitious goal in the first place,” said Clemson President James F. Barker. “It is because U.S.News measures and reports on things that students and parents care about, like class size, graduation rate, freshman retention rate, faculty and student resources.

“We knew if we improved on these things, Clemson would be a better university and a Clemson degree would have more value. The goal has always been to focus on our students and the rankings will take care of themselves.”

Recognition for “writing in the disciplines” highlights outstanding academic programs commonly linked to student success. Clemson consistently receives recognition for making writing a priority at all levels of instruction and across the curriculum. Clemson was identified as one of 19 colleges and universities in the nation that make writing a priority across all disciplines.

The university also was identified as one of 14 schools excelling in senior capstone — experiences graduating students participate in to create a project that integrates and synthesizes what they’ve learned over the course of their undergraduate college years.

Clemson was ranked No. 59 in engineering schools among all institutions, public and private, whose highest degree is a doctorate.

“We are excited once again when it comes to Clemson being recognized as one of the nation’s top universities,” said Robert Barkley, director of undergraduate admissions at Clemson. “When considering these rankings, along with the quality of the Clemson experience… both in and out of the classroom… prospective students and their parents can fully appreciate the value of a Clemson education. It is one of the reasons that interest in Clemson is at an all-time high.”
