Your County Taxes Will See An Increase

A proposed merger of the Greenville County Recreation District and Greenville County passed 9-2 during Tuesday's Greenville County Council meeting.

Bottom line?

Mauldin and Simpsonville, Greer and Greenville,  will be expected to pay higher taxes on both residential and commercial property.

Why? Because these four areas opted out of the recreation district several years back. Residents in those cities started their own recreation districts and therefore residents of the area haven't been paying taxes to support recreation in Greenville County.

The average homeowner in these cities could expect a tax increase of about $20 a year, county spokesman Bob Mihalic told the Greenville News last week.

On Monday, the the Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors unanimously voted to take a position against pending tax increases on commercial property in the city limits of Greer.

The board forwarded this letter to council.

The merger is expected to take effect July 1.
