Pulitzer Prize-Winner Rick Bragg Kicks Off 'Amazing Read' Tonight

Greenville County Library's book discussion series focuses on Bragg's memoir "All Over but the Shoutin.'"

Former New York Times Pulitzer Prize-winning feature writer, Rick Bragg, will be in the Upstate this evening to kick off the Greenville County Library System's "Amazing Read" series.

The free event wil be held tonight at 7 p.m. at the Fountain Inn Center for the Visual & Performing Arts, 315 N. Main St.

Bragg will speak about his experiences growing up in the South and will read excerpts from his best-selling memoir, All Over but the Shoutin.'

The book chronicles the hardscrabble lives of his northeastern Alabama family, focusing on his big-hearted mother, who went eighteen years without a new dress so that her sons could have school clothes, and picked other people's cotton so that her children wouldn't have to live on welfare alone — and Bragg's father, a hard-drinking man with a murderous temper and the habit of running out on the people who needed him most.

In addition to his talk, Bragg will answer questions from the audience, as well as sign books.

Amazing Read 2012 is a collaboration of the Greenville County Library System and the Laurens County Library. The Amazing Read selection of Bragg's book is designed for audiences 18 and older, with the intent to encourage discussion and community around literature.

When Bragg's visit is history, the discussion will just be beginning. Don't miss All Over but the Talkin' book discussions held at a branch near you in both Greenville and Laurens counties in the coming weeks.
